Clump of cells (I)
Audra knew, with a heavy certainty, that it was nothing more than a clump of cells growing inside her. Cells that neither she nor Blake wanted, nor were they even remotely prepared for. Hell, even that clump of cells probably wouldn't want parents like them. Still, despite knowing that going to the hospital was the only sensible choice, fear gripped her with its claws. An all-consuming, gut-wrenching fear that made her hands tremble, her whole body quiver, and her legs feel like lead with every step forward.
"It's just a clump of cells," she whispered to herself, as if saying it out loud would make it less real.
Cells. Yes. But somewhere in her heart, she knew: at some point, she too had been just that. A helpless, unformed, but already living being. The last child of her family. A miracle, because doctors had insisted for years that her parents couldn't have more babies.
The same miracle that had brought her parents so much joy was now nothing but a curse to her. Something to be rid of as soon as possible.
Her conscience gnawed at her insides, even though she knew rationally that countless women had made the same choice. She wasn't alone in this decision. It was the most sensible, responsible thing to do. Yet that did little to quiet the churning guilt in her stomach.
"Shit, I can't... My legs won't move," she muttered, forcing a painful smile as she tightened her grip on Blake's hand.
At least he was here. Without him, she knew she wouldn't have even made it to the doctor's office. He was here, just like every other time when she needed him most.
Blake glanced down, noticing how violently her hand was shaking. He squeezed it gently, his tone halfway between teasing and concern.
"Do I need to carry you or what?"
