A new beginning…

Elijah Hart, you are free to go.

After four years, two months and eleven days, those words sounded sweet. The clothes didn’t fit well, they smelled musty, as if they had been in storage for four years two months and eleven days.

It was amazing how being outside that wall made the sunlight seem brighter than it ever was in the yard.

He caught the bus into town, he had a parole officer to check in with once a week, but otherwise he was free. Free to do what, he didn’t know, but whatever it was going to be, it was on his schedule for a change.

Whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.

Fuck yeah!

That was truly freedom. No cell, no guards and no schedule.

Four plus years wasted on a stupid mistake. A couple of stupid teenagers throwing down over a girl and the guy had a fucking glass jaw. A fraction to the right, and no damage. It wasn’t even a hard punch, but Joey had dropped, his head bouncing off the parking curb and that was it.

Manslaughter.

Time served, good behaviour, remorse.

That was the easiest part, remorse. He still felt horrible, they had been out drinking together and had decided to throw down to see who got to ask this hottie out.

In the end it didn’t matter.

It was time to start over.
