too close to you.

Dahlia was focused on the task of reconnecting the sensory fibers in Rhys's left forearm. He lay there, as calm as ever, off, but not dead. His metal frame bore the marks of the accident, his left leg crushed, part of his artificial chest caved in, as if he had desperately placed himself between her and death. And he had.

Each time she ran her finger along a cable, it was like touching a memory. Ever since she was a child, Rhys had always been there for her. A protector, a nanny, a friend. A strange family gift, inherited from her mother.

But to her, he had never been just an android.

When she was little, she used to talk to him like she would to an imaginary friend. At eleven, she had cried in his arms when she lost her first science contest. At fifteen, she had dyed a lock of her hair and he had noticed. You look different today, Dahlia. And she had smiled for days just because of that simple comment.

"You're an idiot." She whispered, placing a new metal plate on his chest. "You shouldn't have thrown yourself." Her fingers paused for a moment. The tip of the sensor blinked. A faint electrical signal ran down Rhys's artificial spine.

His chest rose in a sigh and his eyes, a soft amber hue, lit up. "System 83% operational. Multiple failures in lower limbs. Minimal structural damage." He said, his gaze finally fixed on Dahlia's. He noticed the red beneath her eyes. "Are you safe?"

"You almost destroyed yourself." She whispered.

He stared at her for a few seconds, with an almost human pause between one line of code to another. "It was a necessary calculation. Your life is priority."

Dahlia placed her hand on the side of his face. His eyes seemed calmer now. Or maybe she was just seeing what she wanted to see.
