How to share this

Marriage, in some way, is about that: sharing, making our friends and affections part of something that already exists between us as a couple.

Because I've always said, and I still do, that our relationship didn't need a picture in the family album to be the most intense experience we could have. But somehow, the wedding extends our love beyond our intimacy.

And there’s a problem. Because the way to share it, in this world, is by writing.

Someone once asked me, what I would write about if I were given, just once, the gift, the opportunity to write a perfect text. And I, limited and dumb, said I would write about some nonsense like the nature of being and the meaning of life. And the truth is, the only correct answer was this: I would write about Annemiek van Hulzen.

I would write about what she is, because I don't have enough vocabulary to describe someone so extraordinary, so special in so many ways. Her existence challenges the qualities that common sense can assign to a person.

I would write about what I feel for her, because I have no words to describe this feeling, which goes beyond the notion of love: love is small and ordinary compared to what she provokes in me.

I would write about what it feels like to be loved by someone like her, because I can't find an order of letters that expresses such happiness, that represents this state of the soul, this elevation of the spirit.

But since I don't have that gift, since I can't create a text that does justice to what we want to share with you at this wedding, I leave you this weak, fruitless commentary, in the hope that you can have a glimpse, however blurred and incomplete, of what we celebrate by marrying.

You will learn of yellow glow-sticks and Weird Fishes; of moons and oceans; of eclipses and sea breezes; of sunflowers and pickles... All fragments, small doses, of an "us" that we built, slowly and happily, over 13 years and that now we share with you.
