A chess piece

The Bishop: A Diagonal Mystery

The bishop is one of the most interesting pieces on the chessboard. It moves only diagonally, which already makes it feel a bit unusual. But what’s even stranger is how differently people around the world see this piece.

In English, it’s called the bishop—a religious figure from the church. This version came from the 15th century, when chess was spreading through Europe. Since the piece has a little “hat” (the pointed top), people thought it looked like a bishop’s mitre (church hat), and the name stuck.

But not everyone saw a holy man. In French, the bishop is called le fou, which means “the fool” or “the madman.” Why? Possibly because of the strange, zigzag way the bishop moves—it looked wild or silly to some players.

The Germans call it der Läufer, which means “the runner.” That makes some sense, because the bishop can sweep quickly across the board if the path is clear. It’s a more practical name, focusing on movement, not meaning.

Then we have the Russians, who call it слон (slon), meaning “elephant.” This comes from the piece’s roots in Indian chess (called chaturanga), where it was an elephant from the start. That original meaning faded in Western Europe, but Russia kept it.

So this one chess piece has been a church leader, a fool, a runner, and an elephant—depending on where you are.

And yet, it always moves the same: diagonally, quietly, across its color. Some players forget about their bishops. They seem stuck, limited. But in the right position, a bishop can be powerful—especially in open games. It teaches us that just because your path is narrow doesn’t mean it’s weak. Sometimes, staying in your lane is the best way to strike.
