She’s Back
I feel it before I see her.
A change in the air, something deeper, like the atmosphere remembering how to tremble.
The door opens, and for a moment, I forget how to breathe.
She’s standing there.
Madison.
My mother.
Alive.
Her skin glows like it’s been washed in lightning. Her eyes are the same impossible blue, and for a heartbeat I think: She looks younger than me.
And then she smiles, and the world tilts.
There’s no tenderness in it. Not yet. Just recognition, that ancient, dangerous bond between creator and creation, between flame and spark. She doesn’t need to say a word. I already know she’s seen Laurens again. I can feel it in her posture, in the way her pupils contract as if he’s somewhere in the room, invisible but undeniable.
Part of me wants to run to her, to touch her, to make sure she’s real.
The other part wants to step back, to protect what’s left of me from whatever storm she’s about to bring.
Because Madison never returns quietly.
She arrives like a sentence that ends with fire.
Still, I whisper, “Mama,” and the word catches in my throat like an old melody I swore I’d forgotten.
She looks at me then, really looks, and for the first time, her face softens.
“I told you I’d never stay gone forever,” she says.
And I can’t decide if that’s a promise or a warning.
