It should always be like this
The music starts playing. Your hand holding mine. We dance barefoot under the stars and for a moment it’s just us. I get closer to your ear and I say, oh my… have you been working out? And then you joke back, "Only every time I lift your laundry basket with one arm." And I laugh. It should always be like this. The way you find my hidden smiles.
It’s early Sunday morning. Bedsheet tangled between my hips and your thighs. Half asleep, but so close together in a lazy morning sprawl. Our bodies wrapped in each other’s warmth. Good morning, sweetheart. I turn to you with sleepy eyes. Guess what? I dreamed of you tonight. It should always be like this, the way that even in sleep, you are never far from my mind.
After one day is over, another one comes by. And it’s not every day I get to tell you, or even say it out loud, that I think of you in metaphors, trying to describe in poorly written rhymes how you’ve changed my life. People tend to fear the storms, but without them, there would be no clear skies. And you, with your wonderfulness, with that silly little habit of seeing right through me that I can never stay mad at, you brought me calm and a field of wildflowers I now get to call mine.
And no, it’s not because it’s your birthday. Not at all. Nothing like that. But it should always be like this, you being celebrated for how incredible you are. I hope you know, honey, if just a bit, just how dear you are to my heart.
