"How did she die?"
The question had caught Kai off guard as her daughter toyed with the locket around her neck. "...who?"
"Lela, your mom. How did she die?"
While grief never got easier, it changed as time passed. It wasn't linear and the stages often circled back around, sometimes isolated. Kai had gone through the motions time and time again. Decades had passed and yet, the simple question had instantly brought tears to her eyes, much like any random memory could.
"She uh...car crash," the words were stuttered out, realizing she had never gone into great detail with her youngest children.
"That's sad. Did you cry?" Remi asked without missing a beat.
"Well...yes. I did." Kai managed to blink back her current tears. She knew that she was in for a line of questioning from the eight-year-old and she had to be prepared.
"I'm sorry, mommy. I would be sad and cry if you died too." The moment had melted her for a moment before her next statement came rolling out. "Pap said you're just like her. Is that true??"
"I--I mean, yeah. I look like her."
"No, he said you're loud and bossy."
She laughed incredulously. "Really, Remi? My papi said that?"
"Kind of! I added the bossy part but that's what he wanted to say and I agree!"
"I'm your mom so I have to be bossy. It's the rules, babe. I am like her though. She was funny and...yeah, loud. Definitely didn't take shit. I'll add money to the swear jar so relax. I'll tell you more when you're older. But I'll bet you'll be just like her. And me. The blood is strong."
Remi's eyes went wide, "I'm gonna get kicked out of Rio too?!"
"HE TOLD YOU THAT STORY?!" The Rio story was one of her favorites from her parents but her father would be getting a call for disclosing it to an eight-year-old.
Word to my mami, I got it honest.
