2079.
red and blue flashing lights.
ambulances, police cruisers.
her parents' home was crowded with people and two covered stretchers were being wheeled out to the ambulances as she arrived at the property. immediately, the girl's heart sank. she knew what this meant but she would never accept it until she saw the faces of her dead fathers.
"what's going on?!" the girl yelled, trying to be heard over the chatter of officers and the purring of engines.
she had been out with one of her closest girl friends, celebrating her birthday with a mix of liquor and dancing. currently, her world was spinning and she was feeling faint, but she needed to know right away what had happened.
"i'm serious - tell me what's happening!" she continued, grabbing onto the sleeve of one of the officers.
the man almost looked disgusted, shaking her off not too subtly.
"and who are you?" he wanted to know, raising his brows as he continued writing on his note pad.
acantha felt desperate and distressed - couldn't he see that? "this is my dads' place. where are my dads?"
"there's been what we believe is a double homicide," the officer replied, leaning in a bit as if to smell the liquor scent that was hanging in the air around her. "have you been drinking?"
"it doesn't matter," she continued, balling her fingers into fists. "i need to see my dads."
the man snorted softly, "probably best you don't. i don't think you'll want to invest in an open-casket service, either. it's.. a grim thing that happened to them."
of course acantha's mind began to wander as the ground rose up to meet her and she landed heavily on the grass of the yard. she raised her hands to the sides of her heads and tried to calm the waves of nausea as they hit her. she was going to be sick.
they were dead.
it only meant one thing: she would take her dad's place and she sure as hell wasn't ready for that.
