My grandparents seem so happy in this picture. I wish I knew them better.
I grew up with stories more than memories. I never really knew my parents — not the way I wanted to. They were names, songs, and whispers of a love that burned too bright and too fast. Dave and Genna Mustaine — the legends, the lovers, the heartbreak that ended before I ever got to understand it.
So instead, I had Tone and David Carlton. My grandparents, though that word never felt big enough. They were home. Tone — calm, patient, with a smile that could quiet a storm. A doctor with hands made for healing but a heart that never stopped mothering. And David — all sharp wit and endless curiosity, who somehow turned bedtime stories into medical lectures that made me laugh until I cried. They were opposites in every way but one: they loved deeply, without condition, without hesitation.
And then there was Roxanne. My older sister, my almost-mother, my fiercest protector. She carried our parents’ fire — the stage lights, the chaos, the sparkle — but she never let me fall through the cracks of that legacy. Between her and my grandparents, I grew up wrapped in a kind of love that wasn’t perfect, but it was steady. Real. I was raised by the people who kept their light alive. And that’s a love story all its own.
