#2 Across the Table - Private Thoughts

Tatsuro sat in the corner booth of the small diner, nervously fiddling with the straw in his soda. The smell of fries and burgers filled the air, but his appetite was nowhere to be found. All he could think about was her.

Rosie sat across from him as she waited for their food to arrive. She looked up every now and then, smiling at something outside the window, and he couldn’t help but stare at her. Her laugh—light and effortless—echoed in his mind, and the way her hair fell over her shoulders made his chest tighten.

He hadn’t planned on falling for her. It just happened, slowly and quietly. They had been friends, always joking around and talking about nothing and everything. But somewhere along the way, the way he saw her had changed.

Sitting there, his mind raced. He had imagined this moment for weeks—just the two of them. But now that it was happening, he was a mess. Did she notice the way his hands shook when she looked at him? Could she tell that he was thinking about her all the time, wondering what it would be like to hold her hand, to tell her how he really felt?

Rosie caught his gaze and raised an eyebrow. “What’s up? You’ve been quiet,” she said, her voice cutting through his thoughts.
Tatsuro swallowed, trying to play it cool. “Oh, nothing. Just… thinking.”
“About what?” she asked, leaning forward slightly. That simple movement made his pulse quicken.

He wanted to say you. To tell her that every time they hung out, he liked her more. That she wasn’t just his best friend anymore—she was the only person he thought about when he woke up. But he couldn’t. The words stuck in his throat, tangled with fear. What if he ruined everything? What if she didn’t feel the same?

“Just stuff,” Tatsuro finally muttered.
He knew one day he’d have to tell her. But tonight, sitting across from her in the soft glow of the diner lights, maybe it was enough just to be there, watching her smile.
