There was a long silence after that, one Kay could sense was entirely intentional.“Are you hearing yourself right now?”“Yes.”
Kay’s tone was clipped, annoyed, because she knew what was coming. She had walked right into it.“Would you make any of them feel guilty if something like that happened to them?”“No, that's just absurd.”
“What would you do instead?”“Take care of them. What kind of question is that? Do whatever it is in my power to make their lives easier in any way I can.”
“And yet, you don’t extend yourself the same courtesy.”“…no.”
“And why is that?”Because you don’t deserve it.There was a pregnant pause there in which Kay closed her eyes tightly, trying to get rid of the words resonating in her head.“Because I don’t deserve it.”
“Who is telling you that?”“The voice.”
“Do you truly believe what it’s saying?”Kay hesitated then, torn and feeling backed against the wall. She could viciously lash out, or be entirely honest. Stubborn or not, she wanted to heal.“I don’t want to, but it’s really loud.”
“You have been to several social events, so you might be able to answer this question for me: who is usually the loudest person in a room full of people?”“The obnoxious one who doesn’t know shit about fuck, but loves pretending they do for the attention. It’s fucking pathetic.”
“That’s enough for today, Kay. Sleep on that last one.”
