[Y142.01] - Betrayal (Part 1/3)

The idea had formed when Jacob had casually mentioned how she’d been with them for almost a year now. Just a couple more days and it would be the baby’s second birthday. Her hand had found the shape of the key she wore around her neck beneath her clothes. A reminder. Would it be so terrible if she would… check up on her? No one had to know?

It was the middle of the night when Jennifer silently gazed down at the sleeping almost two year old. She’d noticed the girl’s name represented in the room’s decoration and it had struck an emotional chord, making her smile though. They’d found the book, then, with the note attached.

Ruby.

Jennifer looked up from the crib at the soft sound of footsteps. It couldn’t be Thor’s or Jasper’s because she hadn’t heard their door, which meant… A slight frown settled between her brows and, after kissing her fingertips and lightly touching them down on the sleeping child’s forehead, she tiptoed to the bedroom door. Sneaking out and through the corridor toward the living space, Jennifer halted underneath the cased opening at the sight of a figure, rummaging a drawer across the room.

What the fuck was Jake doing?

He’d offered to drive her when she voiced the irrational desire to revisit what had been her temporary home for a year. Coming to think of it, Jacob had been rather quick to suggest he’d tag along and he’d rather reluctantly agreed to stay back at the apartment door as a look out of sorts. Clearly, he’d given up his position to… search the place?
