C is for Cookie and also a grade

Cookie was the youngest child of the triplets and, for a long time, the baby of the Funk family. That is, until Holly showed up with her big, cute, and curious eyes and stole the show. But by then, Cookie had already mastered the art of getting what she wanted without really asking. You'll see, before she could say, “I’m hungry,” someone had already handed her a cookie. If she stood on tiptoe trying to reach the cookie jar, someone was already lifting her onto the counter.



It wasn’t that she couldn’t work hard. It’s just that she genuinely believed the universe was on her side, that things would… somehow… always work out. And they usually did.

But this time, something was different. Midterms were coming, and grades would be sent home soon. While her older siblings had done well in completing their assignments, particularly her brother, who even offered helpful reminders to the teacher (“You forgot to assign us homework!”). Cookie, on the other hand, had… nothing. Not on paper. Not online. Not even in a crumpled folder under her bed.

Sure, she meant to do the work. Like on the first day of school, she’d spent the whole first Sunday baking cookies with Dad to hand out during introductions, so people would remember her name and want to be her friend. But unbeknownst to her parents, who could never figure out the cause, she had been born with an incurable case of a sweet tooth.
