Ivy was as unexpected as she was wanted; a gift no one had asked for yet couldn’t refuse, as she arrived when her parents needed her most. She came wrapped in hope and determination, and brought along the tools her father had been searching for. As it turned out, all Ronan Rutgers needed was a reminder that he could—and would—be better.

With her relentless newborn cries came the gentle sound of piano keys being stroked in the middle of the night. Her first laugh summoned an entire song from her father. And by the time she was nearly a year old, she fell asleep each night to the most beautiful lullabies, sung by an artist no one had heard perform in the past two years.

True to her name, Ivy was evergreen. She thrived in every season, bringing spring wherever she went, and under her watchful blue eyes, no one in that house could bring themselves to wither.

Her eyes mirrored her father’s, but the soft waves of dark brown hair that crowned her growing head belonged entirely to her mother. Ivy’s fiery curiosity and boundless determination were her mother’s as well, traits that began to reveal themselves in the fearless steps she took as her first birthday neared, or in how her tiny hands explored, grabbed, and tossed everything within reach, leaving a lovely trail of chaos in her wake.

And from there, her energy would only increase.
