Ode to my best friend

I might be young, but I still remember when
you smiled at me and invited me to play.
I was in my overalls, my hair in two ponytails.
You were in your summer dress,
your straw hat shielding the sun from your face.
"You’ll hide, I’ll seek. We’ll have cake for dessert!"And right then, I knew you’d be my best friend.
Twelve days passed before I saw you again.
New Year’s Eve in New York, and the excitement filling the air.
My mom and aunts said I should have some rest,
but I couldn’t wait to see my best friend.
Then you came, all the way from London to L.A.
Eleven long hours flying all alone by yourself.
I’d heard of heroines before in many fairy tales,
but I never knew I’d meet one as cool and as brave
until I met you, my dear best friend.
After ten nights of sleeping under our made-up tent,
you stayed with me forever, and I was no longer scared.
You brought your dad, and suddenly, everything fell into place.
The mosquitoes and the bad guy who steals candy,
they all ran away.
Nine slices of cake later, our parents were impressed
that we still managed to clean our dinner plates.
You saw what I did, and still, you didn’t tell.
The magical disappearance of broccoli and kale,
our little secret remains.
How lucky I am to have you as my best friend.
