Last night, I texted Cherry to tell her I was feeling ill.
Just a quick message, nothing dramatic. I thought I’d sleep it off, wake up feeling half human again. Instead, I woke up to a knock at my hotel door.
Cherry.
In New York City.
I nearly fell over. One minute, I’m coughing my lungs up, feeling like death warmed up. The next, my girl is standing there, looking like a dream, holding a bag full of medicine, snacks, and, God bless her, a packet of teabags from London.
She flew across the world just to be with me when i was sick. Who does that?
Cherry does.
Now, I’m wrapped up in hotel blankets, head on her lap, while she strokes my hair and hums some tune that makes my headache a little less hellish. There’s something about her presence, like she brings the world back into focus. I swear, she could cure anything just by being here.
So yeah, I still feel like death. But if this is what being sick looks like? I’ll take it.
New York is magic. But Cherry? She’s the real miracle.
